چکیده

Current mobile technology works well to connect individuals together at any time or place. However, general focus on one-to-one conversations has overlooked the potential of always-on group and community links. I hypothesize that asynchronous persistent audio is a superior medium to support scalable always-on group communication for mobile devices. To evaluate this claim, one must first have an adequate interaction design before its possible to investigate the qualities and usage patterns over the longterm. This design does not exist for mobile devices. This thesis takes the first step in this direction by creating and evaluating an initial design called RadioActive. RadioActive is a technological and interaction design for persistent mobile audio chat spaces, focusing on the key issue of navigating asynchronous audio. If RadioActive is shown to be a good design in the long-term, I hope to prove with additional studies the value of asynchronous persistent audio. In this thesis I examine related work, describe RadioActive from a methodologically constrained bottom-up approach, discuss the theoretical rationale behind the design, what seems to work, what doesn't, and suggestions for the future. RadioActive: Enabling Persistent Mobile Communications for Groups

Current mobile technology works well to connect individuals together at any time or place. However, general focus on one-to-one conversations has overlooked the potential of always-on group and community links. We hypothesize that asynchronous persistent audio is a superior medium to support scalable always-on group communication for mobile devices. To evaluate this claim, one must first have a...

RadioActive: enabling mobile-based audio forums

In this paper we describe a new kind of asynchronous discussion using audio instead of text over mobile devices. The format of the discussion surrounds both real content and Usenet-style topics. Users engage in public discussion using a combination of spatial and audio navigation.

Audio Recording in Software Engineering

In software engineering projects, valuable knowledge is exchanged in informal, unplanned conversations such as watercooler discussions. Projects can benefit if this knowledge is externalized and made accessible to all project participants. Previous solutions for recording project conversation generally do not cover informal communication due to the lack of portability and widespread availabilit...

Podscanning: Audio microcontent and synchronous communication for mobile devices

Over the past decade, computationally powerful audio communication devices have become commonplace. Mobile devices have high storage capacity for digital audio, and smartphones or networked PDAs can be used to stream internet radio and download podcasts. However, applications that allow mobile devices to be used for synchronous communication (such as person-to-person audio interaction and liste...

Large-Scale Mobile Audio Environments for Collaborative Musical Interaction

New application spaces and artistic forms can emerge when users are freed from constraints. In the general case of human-computer interfaces, users are often confined to a fixed location, severely limiting mobility. To overcome this constraint in the context of musical interaction, we present a system to manage large-scale collaborative mobile audio environments, driven by user movement. Multip...
